ADULT USE HAS ARRIVED!

By: Forest Palmer

As of February of this year, a mere three months since the passing of Amendment 3, Missouri will be opening up cannabis sales to all adults that are 21 and older. This is a huge step forward for our state and it means many things to a lot of people. Earlier this month, a Kansas City man was the first non violent marijuana offender to be released thanks to the passing of Amendment 3. On top of that huge success, the state and local communities will be seeing increased tax revenue that isn't ridiculous like our Illini neighbors. With all the good coming from our new adult use laws, a lot of soon-to-be consumers still have some relevant questions about the new experience. Here is a quick breakdown of some of the more commonly asked questions we are getting and what you can expect from us. hands plant

When do adult sales begin?

KCC is excited to open for adult sales on February 6th, 2023 at 10am.

How much can I purchase at once?

Without a medical card, anyone who is 21 or older can purchase up to 3 ounces of cannabis in a single transaction. When it comes to carts and dabs, a single gram is equivalent to an eighth. As for edibles, 100mg is equivalent to an eighth. So for example you could buy 2 ounces of flower, 5 grams of dabs, 2 one gram carts, and a 100mg pack of gummies all at once.

With a medical card and following the same equivalents from above, patients will be able to purchase up to 6 ounces of cannabis in a 30 day period. These numbers can be increased by getting a second recommendation from a physician and then following the application process with the DCR.

What if I get pulled over with cannabis?

Medical card holders may have up to a 60 day supply of cannabis on them at any one time. A 60 day supply would be 12 ounces for most patients. If they are also a patient cultivator with the appropriate documentation, they may have up to 18 ounces as long as anything over 12 ounces is in an enclosed and locked facility or container.

Adults 21 years of age or older may have up to 3 ounces of cannabis. Adults with consumer cultivation cards do not have a limit on the amount of cannabis they can have at their home as long as anything over 3 ounces is in an enclosed and locked container and in a private residence. To be specific, it is still (unfortunately) against the law to have more than 3 ounces of cannabis outside of a private residence.

Is it worth having a medical card?

That is entirely up to you. Aside from the differences already stated in previous answers, medical patients may be 18 years old or even younger if you are an emancipated minor or if a legal guardian signs off on it. Patients will also be taxed less and will receive medical specific discounts at KCC. There are also better protections associated with having a medical card such as job security at most places of work.

Medical cards aren’t expensive to get and last for 3 whole years. If you are interested in getting a patient card, I would recommend Dr. Wegner at Kind Remedy. Look them up at kindremedykc.com.

Are there different products for medical and adult use?

Plain and simple, there is no difference in medical and recreational products. That being said, KCC is teaming up with SafeBet to make sure medical patients always have access to FECO.

How will medical patients be taken care of?

KCC is kicking off adult use sales with Medical Mondays. Every Monday, all patients receive 25% off their entire transaction. We will also be doing a 10% discount to medical patients all other days of the week, plus we will be keeping a separate supply of FECO for medical uses.

Can I grow cannabis now?

Yes you can but there are some stipulations. First of all, patients and consumers may get an authorization from the DCR to cultivate 6 flowering plants, 6 vegetative plants up to 14 inches, and 6 clones. Cultivation must take place in a private building with the owner's permission where the grow area is enclosed and locked. Consumer cultivation cards are good for 12 months while patient cultivation cards are valid as long as the patient card is valid.

If you have further questions or concerns about the specifics surrounding adult use sales vs medical benefits, please don't hesitate to call 866-KC-CANNA or stop by one of our locations to discuss.

AARON ollez

Many, many, MANY patients will recognize the beautiful bearded face of Aaron Bono from the original KCC crew in Blue Springs. Aaron has been with the team for almost 2 years now and was the first face many people ever saw when walking into KCC. He grew up in Lee’s Summit and joined the Marine Corps at 17. During his 8 years in the service, Aaron spent a total of 21 months deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, saw 13 different countries, and became a noncommissioned officer. After he got out of the Marine Corps, Aaron spent a short while at a security job before landing in medical equipment repair for 13 years which took him all across the country. Then in May 2021, he landed on the KCC team.

When Aaron joined the KCC ranks, he didn’t really know what to expect and he hadn’t thought much about cannabis as medicine. Since then, he has come around to using medical cannabis himself. Aaron hasn’t been using cannabis for long but since he has it helps ease his mind and body from life’s daily anxieties. He isn’t a huge flower fan (yet) so he leans more into Honeybee gummies and vape carts from Sundro and Vibe. What he appreciates most about cannabis is that it has helped him avoid medications that previously put him into a robotic slump.

Aside from his work, Aaron is an avid gamesman who uses his hobbies and love for the outdoors to give back to the veteran community. Aaron is a member of FISH, or Friends In Service of Heroes, which is a veteran organization that offers services and communities to veterans. On top of general volunteering and membership, Aaron also leads the yearly FISH hog hunt down in Arkansas. It is a 3 day trip where the group gets to find camaraderie and peace in nature while cooking the meat they harvested. Aaron understands the value of camaraderie among veterans and says his favorite experience was and is serving alongside his fellow Marines.

Aaron is a good man and a valued member of KCC. His favorite part of being on this team is getting to meet and interact with all of the vastly different people. Since joining KCC, Aaron says he was previously socially reserved but now he has opened up more. These days, you can find Aaron at our Lake Lotawana store. Stop by and say hey!

If you or a veteran you know would be interested in or benefit from FISH, visit their website at friendsinserviceofheroes.org.

Vivid Cannabis: Florida Kush 1g live rosin

“Florida Kush has quickly become one of the most popular strains in the market, rivaling Bubba Fett! With its high-impact effects and flavorful bud, it is no surprise that when pressed into a rosin, it is brought to a whole new tier of excellence. The rosin has a pale yellow color featuring an embossed “V” and a lemony-sweet, slightly gassy bouquet. Both inhale and exhale display a similar profile with notes of lemon and sugary dough, almost like a lemon sugar cookie! The primary terpenes in this option are caryophyllene, limonene, and linalool, all of which attribute to the confectionary flavors. The effects are a heightened version of the flower, starting with a relaxed heaviness behind the eyes that eventually moves towards the body, leaving one feeling at ease. Because of the relaxing tendencies, Florida Kush would be best utilized during the afternoon or evening as a way to address pain or unwind after a stressful day.” - Kassie Ferrero

Ask Dr. Feeze

Meet our resident Director of Health & Wellness, Cody Freeze, PharmD RPH. In this monthly feature, we will field your questions around cannabis and the interactions with the human body. With such an extensive subject to cover, we've been gathering data with the assistance of our resident Horticulturist, Jeff Krupkowski. To submit a question, please send to info@kccannabis.org with the subject line "Ask Dr. Freeze."

Q: What are some commonly encountered cannabis concentrates? Isn't a concentrate the same thing as an extract? What is a solvent? What does full-extract or full-spectrum mean?

A: The answer for this is extensive, and with varying facets. We will explore these different points through the next couple articles, to touch on as much pertinent detail as possible. In this third and final portion, we will address types of live resin concentrates.

Live Resin Concentrates
The term ‘Live Concentrate’ refers to a cannabis extract that is made from cannabis flower that was flash-frozen immediately after harvest. Preserving the plant tissue in such a way prevents terpene loss that mostly happens during the drying process. Typically, plants are hung up to dry after harvest for up to two weeks, during which time terpenes are off-gassed with the internal moisture of the plant. Flowers remain pungent, however the concentrates made from them are less than prime

Fig 1:A deep freezer capable of reaching -40℃

When flash-frozen cannabis is used for extraction with butane or other hydrocarbons, the result is a product called ‘Live Resin’ or ‘Badder’. Unlike ‘Shatter’ (the result of hydrocarbon extraction of cured flower), Live Resin is filled with THCa crystals and has a higher terpene content. This gives the extract more body; it can sit on a surface as a gooey ball instead of running flat like a liquid. Think Play-Doh vs. molasses: it renders ‘Badder’ vs. ‘Shatter’.

Fig 2:Dry Ice, a cheap and efficient way of freezing fresh flower

Fig 3:Various concentrates and their consistencies
types of concentrates
Live Resin can be purged of the residual hydrocarbons and enjoyed as-is, or it can be put into a ‘Diamond Miner’ to separate the THCa from the terpenes to achieve Diamonds/Sauce, respectively. A Diamond Miner can be as simple as a mason jar or can be much more complicated, costing thousands of dollars with gauges and metal reinforcements, but the result is the same. The residual hydrocarbons build pressure in the sealed container, forcing THCa together, crystalizing them to form ‘Diamonds’ while simultaneously allowing the terpenes to rise to form a ‘Sauce’.

Fig 4:Live rosin extraction, heat pressing flash-frozen cannabis trichomes
heat press
In addition to preserving the terpenes, flash-freezing the flowers makes the trichome stalk and capsule brittle rather than waxy. This makes separating the essential oils much easier and gives us a cleaner product. Imagine how hard it would be handling chicken eggs if they only had their soft inner membrane and not their characteristic hard outer shell? A brittle trichome eases ‘Live Rosin’ extraction, or the process of heat-pressed live cannabis trichomes. Live Rosin can have many different consistencies depending on its cannabinoid/terpene ratio, but it will always have higher terpene content and a lower wax content than standard Rosin from cured trichomes.

Fig 5:Live Resin vs. Live Rosin
resin vs rosin
In conclusion, Live concentrates may cost more than Cured concentrates, but you get more ‘bang for your buck’. Terpenes are more valuable by weight than cannabinoids, making Live concentrates more valuable than Cured ones. But if cannabinoids are what you’re after, Cured concentrates may be all you need anyway. No shame in saving a buck ;)
